Rest In Piece: Shawn aka AKO

I was really sad to hear that Shawn Whisenant aka AKO, AKAYO passed away. I met Shawn through robotswillkill.com a long time ago. He sent me an email about trading stickers and collabing. I liked his work a lot so I was def down. Back then he was doing a lot of characters, his box trucks, and graff stuff. He had great blocks and rollers. This was 2003 I believe. We traded a bunch of times and then ended up doing a printed collab in 2004 maybe 2005. We split 1000 of them and ran out quick. So we did another run of 1000. We talked through email and on the phone over the next few years. Then he was having a solo show in New York so I headed over to met him in person. He was doing these color and shape pieces with hand sewing and accents, really incredible pieces. His work changed over the years but there was always a great sincerity to it.
He was such a nice and talented dude. I was happy that he said yes when I asked him to contribute a piece for the 2011 RWK 10th anniversary show at Mighty Tanaka.
We always talked about doing a new collab sticker but you know how things get in the way. I’m definitely bummed we didn’t get to do it. So I just reordered 2000 of our old collab. I felt like I had to do something.
RIP Shawn aka AKO, AKAYO

Name: Brian Butler
Location: Miami via Boston
Start date: 2004
Influence: I let each project determin the influences, it’s fun to mix it up so I to collaborate with clients as often as possible. Self-guided projects usually relate back to miniature golf, concerts, or roadside culture somehow.
Effect: As a result, I played every miniature golf course in Massachusetts back in 2007, and I’ve scored creative gigs for The Regular Show and Jay-Z.
Long run: There are a ton of projects I’d love to do. Continuing to flex the zines, giant murals, and weirdo installations will probably lead to doing bigger things. I’ll give you a heads up before I air a cartoon and open a theme park.

Name:  Marthalicia Matarrita. sometimes known as M-Squared / (m)2

Location:  Harlem, NYC. Uptown New York

Start date:  Started doing art when I was very young, got real with it in high school : 1994, then focus in college by 2007. Started painting Live since 2007 til now.

Influence:  My art influences has been life. Copying from black books, then reflecting to biographical events to then reflection of life. My art mirrors my reactions as they appear to day to day life.
Effect: I don’t know what effect means in relation to my work. my initial form of effect has been through pen and ink, then acrylic and paint brush, which then evolved to aerosol paint.

Effect: 1.  I would love to get people to understand what I want to communicate. some ideas that I translate via my art works display questions about life and about how we as people communicate with one another. as simple as it gets, that’s what I want to reach out to people

Long Run:  I don’t know how far my art will take me. Thus far, I have realized art has always been there for me since I can remember, have saved my from dark moments, and thus I believe art and art making will be ongoing until I die.

Name: SINNED
Location: Queens, NY
Start Date: Can’t say for sure, started drawing and painting as a kid, I’d say the time I started using SINNED as a identifier for my art was around the mid nineties.
Influence: Big category for this one, let’s see,
New York City – I love the energy of these streets! / Jim Phillips / Miro / Basquiat – my high school trip to see his retrospective at the Whitney was the start / Jackson Pollock / Herb Lubalin /     Camille Rose Garcia / Jeff Soto / Doze Green / Dalek / Mike Giant / Toys / Star Wars / X Men Comics / Stickers at the local skate shop growing up / Motorhead / Danzig / Alice In Chains / Slayer / Sepultura / Sick of it All / Madball / Blind Willy Johnson / Rev Gary Davis / Muddy Waters / Hank Williams / Johnny Cash

Effect:
When I work at home in my studio I find my work reflects different themes and emotions. Lately it’s been more about different ancient tribes of character/creatues, indigenous to areas of a of an imaginary land. These character/creatues have themes that relate to our world and human nature, the idea of good and evil, spirituality and religious aspects.

I don’t really think about how these works will be perceived, they’re about my own questions and in a lot of ways sub conscious thoughts and feelings. I discover a lot through this.

If I’m painting outside or doing something public I tend to work more with the idea of adding something to that area, it usually is more colorful and hopefully cheerful. I think a lot about the impression art on the streets has on kids who haven’y fully developed yet.

Long Run:
My main reason behind making art is to find out what’s inside of me, my thoughts, feelings, ext…  and to push my abilities as an artist.

In the long run I’d like to keep developing as an artist and have the good fortune to show my work.

Name: Camden Noir
Location: Syracuse, New York
Start date:  Started actually painting in 2003
Influence: I was in the army and needed to find a way to clear my head.  So i began drawing and painting.  But i have many influences.  I’m inspired every day by some incredible artists including Chris himself
Effect:  I always said I knew I wasn’t going to change the world.  I’m fine with this.  But I hope I can inspire that one person that will be able to change the world.
Long run:  I can’t picture where I’ll be a few years from now.  As much as I’d like to say that i want to be a household name and one of the top artists in the world, I know that’s unrealistic.  There is so much incredible talent in this world and I’m just glad to be a part of it, even if I’m just a very small part.

If you're seeing this, it's because the gallery type you selected has not provided a template of it's own.

Name: Burn353

Location: Springfield, IL.

Start date: I have known I wanted to be an artist since I won best of show in my kindergarten art show. The prize was a box of 64 crayons and a picture in the local paper. I was pretty much hooked after that.

Influence: My influence is all over the place and changes as I get older. Walt Disney is my ultimate influence. Other artists that Influence me would be Jeff Soto, Jeremy Fish, Evoker, and all you crazy cats from RWK. I have been on board with RWK for over 10 years now. Mad respect to all of you.

Effect: I would like my artwork to speak to people and draw out some kind of emotion. I also like my art to make people laugh and smile. My images may use some dark imagery but overall they are just filled with ridiculous subject matter. When someone sees one of my paintings and loves it enough to purchase it, that motivates me to work that much harder. It isn’t just about the money, it is more about the acceptance and respect of my art. At the end of the day respect goes a lot further than cash.

Long run: In the long run I would like to just do art fulltime. The closer I get the harder I work.
