The Lister opening tomorrow night is not the only game in town. Mighty Tanaka in DUMBO presents a 3d art show titled Year of the Head Chakra (featuring the work of Lionel Guzman, Ed Shawn Herrera and Reginald Pean).
And Robots Will Kill's own Veng has a piece in the Encounters Graffiti Expo at AE Studios in Long Island City:
When I stopped by Brooklynite on Sunday for a visit with Berlin-based duo Various & Gould, I could tell a lot of work had already gone into the Make It Fit show, which opens this Saturday. The two of them were furiously at work crafting bold and colorful new collages using printed material brought from Germany and objects sourced in Brooklyn. From what I’ve seen, I would say they’ve definitely stepped up their game since last showing at Brooklynite with Dain in Fall 2008.
Brooklyn-resident Specter - who last year garnered respect and admiration from peers, fans and strangers alike with his hand-painted, wheatpasted portraits of New York’s largely invisible working class - has also upped the ante. Taking his portraiture as a point of departure, he has built an impressive series of sculptural installations that are a natural progression from his recent street work.

Street Spot friend El Celso opens a solo show entitled No Nudes at SoHo’s Follin Gallery this Tuesday night, January 19th, from 6-8pm. The show will be up until Valentine's Day.
Says the artist, "Rendered in messy, uncontrolled and some-what finely detailed (expletive)-ism, the paintings on canvas, paper and Plexiglas in No Nudes feature fully-clothed models past and present, isolated within habitats that foreshadow free tequila shots*, and fragmented forms that are surrounded by a sea of free tequila shots*, representing the universal unknown in an allegorical interpretation of the effect of contemporary civilization’s disconnect from free tequila shots*." After having shown in the Behind the Seen group show at Ad Hoc last year, Parisian street artist L'Atlas returns to New York for tomorrow's opening of his City Fragments solo show at Gallery Nine5. His signature pieces (photographed above at Paris' La Forge) are not only up all over his hometown, but also on view through the end of November as part of the prestigious Fondation Cartier graffiti retrospective. Having worked for almost a decade perfecting his calligraphy-based typography, L'Atlas has developed a unique style that is instantly recognizable.
Last night he installed a site-specific piece in Washington Square Park, but I'm afraid today's rain will soon wash away what remains of his chalk maze. [Update:Animal has some great action shots.]
City Fragments is on view at Gallery Nine5 at 24 Spring Street from October 16-November 6, 2009. For those of you outside New York, you can download the show catalog here.
If I remember correctly, the mysterious PERU ANA ANA PERU popped up on my radar at some point in 2007. I first saw those words scrawled across a wall in Brooklyn, followed by the perplexing statement FILM DOES NOT EQUAL CINEMA. Intrigued, I took to the Web to find out more, only to come away more confused then ever. Soon thereafter I started noticing their square black & white stickers everywhere.
Not shy to expand their efforts into ever more mediums, Peru Ana Ana Peru have delivered films, stickers, bolt-up boards, and wheatpastes - all the more reason to be excited about what this talented duo has cooked up for their first NYC solo show! ... And Then We Jumped into the Abyss of Numbers Memories in Absurdity from the Bowels of: Peru Ana Ana Peru opens at Brooklynite Gallery this Saturday, October 17th, from 7-10pm.
Yesterday's cloud writing stunt by Ron English was publicity for his Nimbus Vapor show. Featuring work by "21 of the most influential street artists" such as Anthony Lister, Banksy, Faile, Logan Hicks and curated by the Popaganda star, the show opens at Opera Gallery at 115 Spring Street (btw. Greene and Mercer) tomorrow. RSVP to nyc@operagallery.com to attend.
Heads up, kids, this is shaping up to be a busy week for art shows! Getting the weekend off to an early start on Thursday, Mishka is hosting Bay Area artist Bigfoot's return to NYC. Sick and Tired of Human Race: A Collection of Work by Bigfoot opens at 7pm on September 10th at Mishka's 350 Broadway store in Williamsburg. (Thanks, Royce!)
On Friday, my favorite vandals Destroy & Rebuild are part of a Fashion Week extravaganza (more on that later). And Saturday I'll traveling between the boroughs to catch Celso's Peep-O-Rama at AK-57, D*Face at Jonathan Levine and Dain at Brooklynite. Bring it on!
