French Connection

There is no question that French artists have played a pioneering role in the history of stenciling. Legends such as Blek le Rat, Miss.Tic and Jef Aerosol paved the way for today's crop of talented French stencilists, of which C215, the Dude Company and Tian are but a few of the many worth mentioning.

We're pleased to share with you the work of French photographer/videographer and Brooklyn resident Carlito Brigante, who has actively documented his fellow countrymen in action in New York:

New York M-City

I first came across the insanely detailed, large-scale, black & white, architectural stencil work of Polish artist M-City at Planet Prozess in Berlin in 2007.

Upon returning to Berlin a year later, I saw his work in the context of the Urban Affairs exhibition (with Dolk and Emess in the background).

Conveniently, he'd also done a wall in the Friedrichshain neighborhood down the street from where I was staying.

Yet the wall that has impressed me the most to date was this collaboration with Sten and Lex at La Forge in the Belleville section of Paris.

M-City painted his first mural in New York shortly before Christmas (at a wall curated by Ad Hoc). For a terrific pano of the entire wall, check his page on Streetfiles.

Word has it he'll be back in New York after New Years. Stay tuned for further M-City updates...

From Zurich With Love

Judging by their website, Faile were in Switzerland sometime in 2004. Although nothing lasts forever, I was very happy to still find some of their stencils remarkably intact several years later...
